A personal journey...
Mycelium Stories began with a simple truth: we all deserve to see ourselves in the stories we read, especially in the stories we read to our children.
Why representation matters?
As a mother, I learned this the hard way. When my son was small, I searched endlessly for books that reflected our family’s realities — but again and again, I turned up empty-handed. When his dad was transitioning — I couldn’t find a single children’s story that spoke to our particular journey. I wanted my son to see the beauty and bravery in his parent’s transition, the love at the center of our family, and the truth of who we were. No book even came close. Later, when he began asking how he came into the world, I tried to find stories about IVF, donor conception, and queer family-building — stories that were age-appropriate, honest, and actually interesting to a child.
Again, nothing.
So many families like ours exist, but so few stories do. How validating it would be for all children if they could see their realities reflected in story?
Why mycelium?
At the same time, I was inspired by the quiet, intelligent networks of the natural world —the mycelium beneath the forest floor, connecting roots, nourishing growth, and helping entire ecosystems thrive. Storytelling works just like that: our identities, memories, cultures, and relationships weave together, shaping how we understand ourselves and how we belong. Mycelium Stories was created to honour this interconnectedness — and to fill the void I felt as a parent searching for stories my family could see themselves in.
Using ethical, culturally grounded AI, we invite readers to become co-creators: shaping characters who look like them, sound like them, and reflect the complexity of their lived experience. Every story becomes an ecosystem of belonging, rooted in identity and grown with intention. Whether a child is exploring their cultural heritage, a family is navigating a transition, or an adult is reclaiming their narrative, each book becomes a space where they feel recognized, included, and celebrated. This is more than personalized storytelling.
It’s story as connection.
Story as healing.
Story as home.
Welcome to Mycelium Stories — connected by stories rooted in who we are.
With Care,
